Timeline
19 December 2007 Contract signed between Meyer Werft and AIDA Cruises for two more ships of
the same size and specifications as S.680 (AIDAblu).
20 October 2008 Keel laid for newbuilding 690.
1 April 2012 Float out of hull 690.
3 May 2012 Completion of S.690 by Meyer Werft for a total of US $420 million. It was
noted upon her completion that she was the first cruise ship fitted with a
waste heat recovery system (WHRS), which saves 1 ton of fuel per day by
reusing heat from the engines to create steam in the boilers. She was also
the first AIDA ship with virtual portholes in her interior cabins.
12 May 2012 Christening of AIDAmar during the festivities celebrating the 823rd anniversary
of the founding of Hamburg, Germany. Her fleetmates AIDAblu, AIDAluna,
and AIDAsol were all in Hamburg for her christening.
